Does this metro ad make you feel safer?

I saw this ad on the metro platform on the orange line in court house. So the driver (not pictured) has driven 2 million miles without an accident. Are they just inviting bad karma?

This is probably metro’s (poor attempt) at reassuring customers after that horrific crash on the red line last Summer. But this ad is an EPIC FAILURE.

Big Surprise: Unions oppose Limbaugh Purchase of St. Louis Rams. ESPN Assault to Follow.

This post unites several of my interests. Football (the greatest sport on Earth), Rush Limbaugh (the greatest Talk Radio host on Earth), and Dave Checketts (the architect of the awesome 1990s New York Knicks, my childhood favorite team), so I’ll post it, even though it has nothing to do with the law.

As you may have read, Limbaugh and Checketts are in talks to purchase the St. Louis Rams. I was waiting for someone to oppose this purchase based on politics. Didn’t take long. From ESPN (where else):

NFL Players Executive Director DeMaurice Smith on Saturday made a move to solidfy the union against a bid by conservative talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh as part of a group that aims to purchase the St. Louis Rams.

In an e-mail to the union’s executive committee on Saturday specifically addressing Limbaugh’s bid, Smith said, “I’ve spoken to the Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred.”

I won’t rehash the Limbaugh-Donovan McNabb kerfuffle, other to reiterate what Limbaugh said. His comment dealt with the media’s perception of McNabb, not with McNabb. There was no racial animus in what Rush said. Anyone who reads Limbaugh’s words otherwise probably doesn’t care for Rush much, and wants to sully his name. But the facts are irrelevant when they do not match the liberal template.

Anyway, expect ESPN to latch onto this story like a barnacle on a whale, and run wall-to-wall coverage of Rush’s fated comments throughout their football coverage today. I’m surprised it took this long to make the proposed sale political.

Congratulations Cato. Cato Declaration and Constitution Makes Wash Post Best Seller List

In my previous post I joked about Justice Scalia earning royalties from selling Constitutions based on all the originalist opinions he wrote.

Well if someone is going to earn some Sheckels from selling Constitutions, I’m sure as hell glad that its the Cato Institute.

Congrats to Roger Pilon (here is a pic of a Constitution he signed), Ilya Shapiro, and everyone else at Cato, as the Cato Pocket Declaration and Constitution has officially landed at #6 on the Washington Post Best Seller List. It came only 3 places behind Glenn Beck’s latest rant, and ahead of Freakanomics and Sense and Sensibilities and Seamonsters.

Cato Institute Declaration and Constitution

Cato Institute Declaration and Constitution

This is my favorite Pocket Constitution, and I have signed copies from Justice Scalia and Thomas, as well as many others. Buy a copy and support a great group of libertarians!

I see a parallel with the Cato Constitution selling so many copies of a 200 year old document, and the sale of Ayn Rand’s opus, Atlas Shrugged, which has been flying off the shelves since the election of our 44th President. With society’s move towards statism, the people realize how important the precepts of Jefferson, Madison, and Rand are. As Roger inscribed, I hope that the Cato Constitution inspires us all to better secure the precepts set forth in these documents.

While I am on the topic of pocket constitutions, something I take seriously, it is also worth noting that the Federalist Society pocket constitution does NOT include the Declaration of Independence. This always irked me. And the American Constitution Society pocket constitution not only includes the Declaration and the Constitution, but additionally the Gettysburg Address. I suppose the Gettysburg Address is relevant to the extent it impacted the drafting of the Reconstruction Amendments, but I’m not quite why it is in there.

Pic: Smell of Smoke Smell of Liberty

I have previously blogged how I love smoking sections even though I don’t smoke, and to me the smell of smoke is the smell of liberty. I also love seeing bikers in PA without helmets. Some puffy comments wafted in (pun intended), but I hold fast in my beliefs.

So I was having breakfast this morning with one of my former Summer Associates this morning in Arlington, and I saw a sign that made me happy. Soon they’ll have to take down this sign at the Cosi in Courthouse Arlington, Virginia. But I’m proud to patronize an establishment that offers its customers the option to smoke. And the market works beautifully. They limit smoking until after 5 PM. The proprietor made a determination that his clientele would appreciate the option to smoke in a certain section at a certain time, with minimal interference to other customers. Not all Cosi’s (a chain in Virginia) offer this option, but that is the beauty of the market. Well done Cosi in Courthouse!

Marge Simpson to pose for Playboy.

This has absolutely nothing to do with my usual law rantings, but I have been a huge Simpsons fan since the show premiered when I was in Kindergarten. Anyway, Marge Simpson’s Playboy cover shot:

UK Times Online reports:

She appears on the front cover of the November issue, her modesty saved only by the ears of Playboy Bunny chair. Inside there is an interview entitled “The Devil in Marge Simpson” and three pages of pictures.

Marge joins a list of stars who have posed for the magazine since its first edition in 1953, who include supermodel Cindy Crawford, Baywatch actress Pamela Anderson and screen siren Marilyn Monroe.

The magazine’s editor James Jellinek has refused to confirm if the mum-of-three from Springfield will retain her modesty, but said: “It’s very, very racy.”
